Health, Hunger, Thirst and Oxygen in Survival

The four meters that define every 1.0 run — what drains them, what fills them, and how to stay alive underground.

What changed in 1.0

Scrap Mechanic 1.0 and Drilling Thunder (July 24, 2026) replaced the old flat hunger bar with a full survival meter suite: health, hunger, thirst and oxygen. Damage from bots, falls and environmental hazards now reduces a dedicated health bar instead of silently draining hunger. Food restores hunger and thirst separately, and a handful of tier 4 recipes — especially Revival Burgers — restore health during combat.

If you are returning from Early Access, treat this page as mandatory reading alongside the getting started guide. Pre-1.0 food values and boss strategies no longer apply.

The four meters explained

All four meters appear in the bottom-left HUD during Survival Mode:

MeterWhat drains itWhat happens at zero
HealthBot attacks, fall damage, lava, boss mechanicsDeath and respawn at nearest bed or Mechanic Station
HungerTime, sprinting, combat exertionSlow health drain until you eat
ThirstTime, hot biomes, underground heatFaster health drain than hunger alone
OxygenDeep underground, enclosed caverns without airRapid health drain; screen vignette darkens

Hunger and thirst drain at different rates. A meal that fills hunger but not thirst leaves you vulnerable on long underground mining trips even if your hunger bar looks full.

Food restores hunger and thirst

Raw crops restore small amounts when eaten directly, but the real system lives in the Cookbot and food loop. The Cook Bot turns harvested crops into tiered recipes with distinct hunger, thirst and health values displayed on each recipe card.

General rules:

  • Tier 1 (Cooked Wheat, Cooked Beet) — fills hunger slowly; no thirst or health.
  • Tier 2–3 — balanced hunger and thirst; tier 3 adds small passive health ticks.
  • Tier 4 — full hunger and thirst plus significant health restoration.

Plant crops using the farming guide mini-farming technique so you always have raw inputs without triggering early raids. Cook in batches before warehouse runs, boss fights or underground sessions.

Revival Burgers for combat

Revival Burgers are the only reliable mid-fight heal in 1.0. They restore 50 HP instantly, fill hunger and thirst completely, and have a short cooldown between consecutive uses. Every serious combat encounter — Farmbot patrols, warehouse Tapebot nests, the Trash Bot roof arena and the underground final boss — assumes you carry at least three Revival Burgers once tier 4 recipes unlock.

Craft them at the Cook Bot after Quest 7 and Rare Spice drops from Farmbots. Do not waste Revival Burgers on Totebot raids; tier 2 soup handles routine farming defence. Save tier 4 food for situations where bot damage outpaces passive regeneration.

Oxygen underground

The oxygen meter activates when you descend below the surface layer into Drilling Thunder caverns. Enclosed tunnels, lava-adjacent rooms and deep veins deplete oxygen faster than open caverns with glowing moss.

Tips for underground oxygen management:

  1. Carry tier 3+ food with thirst restoration — dehydration accelerates oxygen panic when health is already low.
  2. Build air pockets — leave 2-block gaps to surface shafts every 200 blocks on long mining routes.
  3. Use headlights sparingly — light blocks do not consume oxygen, but stopping to repair in zero-oxygen zones drains health fast.
  4. Mark exit routes — place paint or beacons at every fork; drowning in a dead-end cavern is the most common early underground death.

Full cavern layout and entrance types are covered on the underground mining page.

Difficulty effects on meters

Difficulty settings change how aggressively meters drain:

  • Easy — hunger and thirst drain roughly 40% slower; health passive regen out of combat is slightly faster.
  • Normal — baseline 1.0 tuning; intended for first playthrough.
  • Hard — faster hunger and thirst drain, reduced health regen, oxygen depletes quicker underground.

Raids scale with crop value on all difficulties, but Hard punishes neglected food stockpiles hardest. If you play Hard, automate Cook Bot output early and keep a Freezer chest of tier 3 meals at every outpost.

Early game survival tips

Hours 0–2: Eat cooked Wheat and Beet before exploring wrecks. Hunger drains while you loot; thirst catches up on the walk back to the Mechanic Station.

Hours 2–5: Unlock the Cook Bot through Quest 3. Never leave base with empty hunger and thirst bars — bot aggro during a raid with low meters is a common wipe cause.

Hours 5+: Prioritise recipes that restore both hunger and thirst. Broccoli Bake and Pineapple Pizza are mid-game staples before Revival Burgers unlock.

Before every warehouse or underground trip: Fill all four meters at base, pack tier 3 food plus at least one Revival Burger if tier 4 is unlocked, and set a bed respawn point near your entry shaft.

Common mistakes

  • Eating raw crops only — hunger fills briefly but thirst stays empty.
  • Ignoring thirst on surface runs — players watch hunger and forget thirst until health drains mid-combat.
  • Entering underground with tier 1 food — insufficient thirst recovery during long mining sessions.
  • Hoarding Revival Burgers until endgame — tier 4 unlocks mid-campaign; use them on the Trash Bot and warehouse mezzanine fights.
  • Skipping Cook Bot automation — manual cooking before every trip wastes time you need for meter management.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Does health regenerate on its own in 1.0?

Yes, slowly when you are out of combat and both hunger and thirst are above half. It does not regen during bot fights or while oxygen is depleted.

Can I die from hunger without taking damage?

Yes. Empty hunger or thirst bars cause passive health drain. You will eventually die even if no bot touches you.

How do I restore oxygen underground?

Return to open caverns, surface shafts or built air pockets connected to the surface. Food does not restore oxygen — only leaving low-air zones does.
