Physics & Wedge Update

December 5, 2024 Early Access patch — Smart physics and wedges, separate from the July 2026 1.0 launch.

Last updated:

Do not confuse this with Drilling Thunder

Physics & Wedge shipped on December 5, 2024 as Early Access update 0.7.0. Scrap Mechanic 1.0 / Drilling Thunder shipped on July 24, 2026. Guides that treat wedges as a 1.0 exclusive are wrong — wedges predate Drilling Thunder by more than a year.

For the 1.0 chapter, read Drilling Thunder what’s new and the updates log.

What Physics & Wedge added

  • Smart physics — improved creation-to-creation collision and stability for complex vehicles.
  • Wedge blocks across materials for smoother shapes — see wedges and shapes.
  • Network improvements for multiplayer builds.
  • Creative QoL and selected Survival ship parts unlocked in Creative.

Hotfixes 0.7.1–0.7.3 followed within days for network speed, wedge physics, and save sync. 0.7.4 (March 2026) was a security hotfix only — it did not unlock Chapter 2.

Enabling Smart physics on old saves

If an older Creative or Survival save feels like pre-0.7 physics:

  1. Open Options → Gameplay.
  2. Set Physics quality to Smart.
  3. Save and retest suspension-heavy machines.

New 1.0 worlds already assume the post-0.7 physics stack plus later engine work.

Why this page exists

Returning players often ask “are wedges new in 1.0?” — no. They are a 2024 foundation that 1.0 still uses. Keep wedge tutorials under building and treat Drilling Thunder as the story/mining/schematic chapter instead.

No. Wedges arrived in the December 2024 Physics & Wedge update. Drilling Thunder is the July 2026 1.0 story chapter.

Do I need Smart physics in 1.0?

New 1.0 worlds use the modern physics path. Older saves may still need Options → Gameplay → Physics quality → Smart.

Where is the full 1.0 changelog?

On the [updates](/resources/updates/) page, starting with Patch 1.0.5 as the current live build.
