Grow Labs Research Facility
Interior layout, story NPCs, the conveyor tutorial room, and the elevator repair chain.
What Grow Labs is
Grow Labs is the multi-storey research building at the centre of Mining Island. Axolot added it in the Drilling Thunder chapter as the bridge between surface farming research and underground drilling. The facility looks abandoned — broken terminals, frozen conveyor belts, seed-sample crates in the lobby — but two voiced story NPCs still operate inside, and the building teaches the ore-processing chain before you risk deep caverns.
If you only need directions to the island, read the Mining Island guide first. This page covers what to do inside Grow Labs once you arrive.
Floor-by-floor layout
Ground floor — Lobby and Specimen intake
The lobby is your orientation point. Yellow floor markers lead to every other room. Pick up:
- Log entries on the reception desk (lore about the drilling program).
- Seed-sample crates (decorative blocks you can scan later at the Schematicbot).
- Broken terminal fragments — some convert into circuit components at the Refinery Bot.
Two Farmbots patrol the exterior roof; clear them before Dr. Elena Voss unlocks the upper floors.
Second floor — Specimen Archive
The Specimen Archive stores Grow Labs research logs. Interact with each terminal to add entries to your Quest Journal. The Archive explains why the mine elevator collapsed and foreshadows the Trash Bot encounter on warehouse rooftops.
Hidden on this floor: a Tier 1 Schematic crate behind a movable shelf. Push the shelf with your hammer to reveal it. Scan at the Mechanic Station before leaving the island if you have a Schematicbot placed.
Third floor — Drill Control Room
Locked until Quest 6 completes. Contains:
- The elevator activation switch for the collapsed mine shaft.
- The conveyor tutorial network — accepts any ore type and outputs refined metal into a chest.
- Dr. Elena Voss during the final island dialogue sequence.
Use the tutorial conveyor to test ore processing layouts without building your own Crusher chain first.
Story NPCs inside Grow Labs
| NPC | Location | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Dr. Elena Voss | Lobby → Drill Control Room | Quest giver, Elevator Access Card |
| Foreman Kael | Near collapsed elevator | Conveyor parts trader, elevator blueprint |
Both NPCs use the 1.0 dialogue system with full subtitles. Skipping lines does not block progression, but you miss context linking Grow Labs to the wider quests and NPCs arc.
Dr. Voss marks Mining Island on your compass during Quest 6 and awards the Elevator Access Card after the rooftop Farmbot patrol dies.
Foreman Kael sells conveyor segments and upgrades your Ore Prospector schematic once you return with refined rare metal from the underground.
The conveyor tutorial room
The third-floor tutorial conveyor is the safest place to learn multi-block logistics:
- Drop any ore into the intake hopper.
- Watch it travel through two conveyor segments.
- Collect refined metal from the output chest.
The tutorial room uses simplified recipes — output is always refined metal regardless of input ore type. Copy the layout spacing when you build your first permanent refinery in the underground mining layer.
Grow Labs and the ore chain
Grow Labs was designed as an agricultural-mining hybrid. The lobby seed crates hint at the UV Grow Bed (vehicle-mounted farming) unlocked later via Schematics. The Specimen Archive references the Ore Crusher and Ore Prospector by name — read the entries before descending so you know which Schematics to prioritise underground.
Recommended scan order after leaving Grow Labs:
- Plasma Drill schematic (underground crate).
- Ore Crusher schematic (Grow Labs hidden crate or underground).
- Ore Prospector schematic (Foreman Kael upgrade after first rare metal haul).
Full machine reference: ore processing.
Combat and hazards
Grow Labs interior is mostly safe once rooftop Farmbots are cleared. Hazards to watch:
- Partial lava leak near the elevator shaft — deals burn damage if you stand in the pool.
- Totebot spawns on the causeway during Quest 6 approach (outside the building).
- Dark corridors on the second floor — bring a headlight battery before exploring without torch blocks.
No Tapebots spawn inside Grow Labs. Save Spud Gun ammo for the warehouse runs that follow island completion.
What to bring
- Spud Gun with 40+ rounds (causeway patrol only).
- 20 refined metal for elevator platform repair.
- Plasma Drill or schematic — rubble at the shaft mouth cannot be cleared otherwise.
- Revival Burgers if you plan to continue into the underground the same trip — see Cookbot and food.
Common mistakes
- Rushing to the elevator before talking to both NPCs. Kael’s conveyor upgrade saves hours later.
- Ignoring the hidden Schematic crate on floor two.
- Descending without reading Specimen Archive logs — you will miss why certain underground veins matter.
- Building a full refinery inside Grow Labs. The tutorial room is for learning; permanent bases belong in the caverns below.
Patch 1.0.4 — Growlab 5 combat section
Axolot redesigned a combat corridor in the Growlab 5 wing after players reported getting locked out when Farmbots pushed them into dead-end geometry. If you cleared Grow Labs before August 1, 2026 and remember a softlock after a rooftop fight, update to patch 1.0.4 — the layout now always leaves a return path to Dr. Voss and the elevator chain.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Is Grow Labs the same as Mining Island?
Grow Labs is the main building on Mining Island. The island includes the dock, perimeter patrols, and the collapsed elevator; Grow Labs is the interior research facility.
Can I reset the tutorial conveyor?
Yes. Empty the output chest and drop another ore into the intake. The tutorial network has no cooldown.
Do Grow Labs NPCs leave after the questline?
No. Dr. Voss and Foreman Kael stay permanently and update their dialogue as you progress the underground story.
