Scrap Mechanic Returning Player Guide
Your Early Access factory, your Creative megabase, and the honest path into 1.0 without losing years of work.
Welcome back, Mechanic
If your last Scrap Mechanic session was 2020–2025 Early Access, 1.0 & Drilling Thunder (July 24, 2026) is not a small patch. Axolot rebuilt Survival terrain, quests, health, crafting balance and the entire underground layer. This guide answers the three questions returning players ask first: Can I keep my save? Can I bring my builds forward? Is it worth reinstalling?
Short answers:
- Survival saves — usually no for the full 1.0 story. Start fresh or use Steam betas for legacy play.
- Creative builds — often yes, but test copies before trusting physics-heavy machines.
- Worth returning — yes if you want a voiced campaign, mining depth and doubled bot roster.
Survival save compatibility
Axolot’s official stance: existing Survival saves are not compatible with the 1.0 release. This is not a file-format quirk — world generation, quest state, enemy tables and recipe gating all assume a Drilling Thunder world created after July 24, 2026.
Symptoms when forcing an old Survival save into 1.0:
- Infinite loading or crash on world select.
- Missing yellow quest markers and silent NPCs.
- Empty underground — no cavern layer because the world pre-dates new terrain rules.
- Craftbot menus missing Schematic-gated recipes with no way to unlock them.
Recommended path: create a new Survival world on Easy, follow getting started, and treat the old save as archived. Full first-hour steps live in how to start fresh in 1.0.
Steam beta rollback for legacy Survival
Steam exposes historical client branches so you can finish an old project:
- Back up
%AppData%\Axolot Games\Scrap Mechanic\User\entirely. - Library → Scrap Mechanic → Properties → Betas.
- Choose 0.5.1 (Previous version) or 0.3.5 (Last version before survival release).
- Wait for the downgrade download — verify the version string at launch.
- Open the legacy save only on that branch.
Rollback is one-way for progression. You cannot migrate that world’s quest state into Drilling Thunder later. Use it to export blueprints, record videos, or say goodbye — not as a permanent alternative to 1.0.
Creative world compatibility
Old Creative worlds can load in 1.0, but compatibility means the file opens — not that every creation behaves identically.
Test these on a duplicated world copy before trusting your main Creative archive:
- Steering chains and wheel suspension.
- Controller logic, sensors and timer loops.
- Bearing stacks and frozen-bearing tricks from pre-1.0 physics.
- Workshop Parts dependencies — missing UUIDs spawn invisible collision.
- Modded blocks from authors who have not published 1.0 updates.
The safest preservation workflow:
- Open the Creative world on a legacy branch if 1.0 breaks it.
- Export critical vehicles and factories as blueprints from the Lift.
- Update to 1.0, start a new Creative or Survival world.
- Import blueprints at the Scrap City Garage once reachable in Survival, or spawn from blueprints in Creative.
Blueprint migration beats save surgery
Community guides about “transferring old worlds into 1.0” often mean copying .db files into new folders. That sometimes loads surface terrain but does not inject underground caverns, Grow Labs state or Chapter 2 NPCs into regions generated under Early Access rules.
Blueprints are the supported cross-version format:
- They store machine geometry and wiring, not full world quest state.
- They survive engine updates better than whole-world migration.
- They import cleanly into 1.0 via Garage or Creative Lift.

Mods and Workshop after years away
Expect a transition period. Parts mods and Custom Games from 2024 builds may crash 1.0 until authors re-upload. Patch 1.0.1 fixed some mod-related crashes but not every dependency.
Before enabling old subscriptions:
- Check each Workshop page for a post-July 2026 update.
- Test in Creative copies.
- In multiplayer, every player needs identical mod lists.
Is Drilling Thunder worth your time?
If you left because Survival felt unfinished, 1.0 is the answer Axolot spent years building: a complete story ending, meaningful underground progression, warehouse boss fights and QoL like large-chest loot vacuum and force placement.
If you only ever played Creative, you still gain 400+ new parts immediately — but the headline reason to return is Survival finally having an ending worth routing toward.
Suggested return path (one evening)
- Hour 0 — Back up saves. Read this page and start fresh in 1.0.
- Hour 1 — New Easy Survival world, follow yellow markers through getting started.
- Hour 2–3 — Mechanic Station, first tractor, first farm — beginner roadmap.
- Hour 4+ — Spud Gun trade, first warehouse — how to get a Spud Gun.
- Parallel — Open Creative copy of old world, export one favorite vehicle blueprint for later Garage import.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
I have 500 hours in Early Access — must I lose everything?
You keep Steam library access and can roll back to legacy branches for old saves. For Drilling Thunder content, start a new Survival world and bring forward builds via blueprints, not whole-save migration.
Does Excavation Island differ from Mining Island?
Marketing used Excavation Island; in-game signs and quests say Mining Island. They refer to the same 1.0 landmark — see the Mining Island guide.
When should I update if I rely on mods?
Wait until your critical Workshop mods show a 1.0 update, or play vanilla 1.0 on a separate branch while keeping Early Access installed via Steam betas for modded Creative.
