What is Scrap Mechanic?
Scrap Mechanic is a multiplayer sandbox game with a strong Survival Mode. You crash land on an agriculture planet overrun by haywire Farmbots, then build vehicles, bases and entire automated factories to survive. The 1.0 chapter adds a full underground layer, new mining tools and a questline.
What is in the 1.0 update?
The 1.0 update released on July 24, 2026 and added:
- A full underground layer.
- A questline with voice-acted NPCs.
- The Plasma Drill and Ore Crusher.
- New enemies including the Trash Bot boss.
- Major performance improvements.
How do I start playing?
Buy the game on Steam, launch it, and select Survival Mode. Follow the on-screen hints and read our getting started guide. The first 30 minutes are the most important — do them right and the rest of the game opens up.
Is Scrap Mechanic multiplayer?
Yes. You can host a world and invite friends through Steam. Multiplayer makes raids easier but the game is fully playable solo. The 1.0 patch improved network responsiveness. There are no dedicated servers — see the multiplayer guide for co-op roles and host tips.
What are Creative Mode and Challenge Mode?
Creative Mode gives access to every part with no survival constraints. Challenge Mode offers 40 Master Mechanic Trials. Both modes remain available in 1.0.
What is the Scrap City Garage?
The Scrap City Garage lets you import blueprints from Creative Mode into a Survival save — ideal for transferring tested vehicles and machines.
Can I play Scrap Mechanic on console or mobile?
No. Scrap Mechanic is currently PC-only, on Windows, Mac and Linux via Steam. There is no console or mobile version.
How long is the game?
A focused first run takes 8-10 hours. The full questline adds another 4-6 hours. Most players continue exploring free-play indefinitely after the questline ends.
What is the best weapon?
For early game, the Spud Gun. For mid game, the Spud Shotgun. For late game, the Plasma Drill mounted on a vehicle. There is no single best weapon — each encounter rewards a different loadout.
Can I play with my friends who own the game on a different platform?
No. Scrap Mechanic does not have cross-platform play. Everyone in a multiplayer session must be on PC (Windows, Mac or Linux).
Is this wiki official?
No. This is a fan-built resource. We are not affiliated with Axolot Games. Always cross-check announcements on the official Steam page.
How do I report an error on the wiki?
Use the contact channels in the footer. We respond to wiki corrections within a week and to content suggestions within a month.
Will my Early Access save work in 1.0?
Usually not for Survival. Pre-1.0 saves often fail to load or miss the underground layer, quest markers and Schematic progression. Do mods still work after 1.0?
Many Workshop mods broke until authors publish 1.0 updates. Patch 1.0.1 fixed some mod crashes but not every dependency. All multiplayer players need identical mod lists. Read mods and Steam Workshop.
What is the Fan Pack?
Optional cosmetic DLC — station skins, outfits and decorative blocks. It is not required for Chapter 2, the underground or bosses. Details: Fan Pack.
Welding broken after 1.0.4?
Patch 1.0.4 accidentally broke welding onto bearings, suspensions and pistons — the Connect Tool would refuse to attach blocks. Patch 1.0.5 (August 3, 2026) restored this. Update Steam, restart the game, and retry your build. If problems persist, gather your log file and save, then follow our troubleshooting guide before emailing bugs@axolotgames.com.
How often is this wiki updated?
The wiki is reviewed after every Steam patch. The current revision reflects patch 1.0.5 (August 3, 2026) and the full Drilling Thunder launch. We also update individual guides whenever a community mechanic changes.

Do old saves work in Scrap Mechanic 1.0?

Why can't I weld to bearings or pistons?

Is Scrap Mechanic free?
No. The base game is a one-time purchase on Steam. There are no microtransactions or subscription fees.
Does Scrap Mechanic support VR?
No. There is no official VR support. The community has unofficial VR mods, but they are not stable on the 1.0 patch.
Can I run Scrap Mechanic on a laptop?
Yes. The minimum specs are very modest. The 1.0 patch added aggressive performance optimisations, so any laptop from the last five years will run the game smoothly.
