What the Mechanic Station actually is

The Mechanic Station is a large, illuminated wrench-shaped building. The exterior looks decorative, but inside sits the Dispenserbot — a yellow vending-machine-style NPC that places every crafting bench you need. Until you interact with the Dispenserbot, no crafting benches exist in the world.

The benches you can place

Interact with the Dispenserbot and choose any of the following benches to place on a flat surface:

  • Craftbot — the core crafting bench. Unlocks all structure parts, seats, batteries, wheels, and basic tools.
  • Refinery Bot — smelts raw ore into refined metal and plastic.
  • Cook Bot — turns raw crops into cooked food and higher-tier recipes.
  • Dress Bot — purely cosmetic; paints and skins for your creations.
  • Schematicbot — added in 1.0. Scans objects you find and adds new recipes to the Craftbot.

How the 1.0 questline works

Drilling Thunder introduced an interactive quest NPC at the Mechanic Station. After the underground tutorial, this NPC gives you a sequence of objectives:

  1. Find your first warehouse — follow the road, look for the largest building in a biome.
  2. Recover a Warehouse Key — farm Farmbots with the Spud Gun you traded for.
  3. Reach the underground entrance — marked on your compass once the quest starts.
  4. Build your first Ore Crusher — see the underground mining guide for blueprints.
  5. Refine rare metal — return to the Refinery Bot and process the new ores.

The questline is the most reliable way to unlock the 1.0 progression. Skipping it is possible but slow.

Common Mechanic Station mistakes

  • Placing benches too far from the Dispenserbot. Each bench must be within 5 blocks of the Dispenserbot to be reachable.
  • Forgetting to assign a Refinery Bot. Without it, raw ore is useless.
  • Ignoring the 1.0 NPC. It does not give experience, but its quests unlock the only reliable way to get rare metals.

What to build next to the Station

Use the controllers and sensors system to automate the Station itself. A common pattern is to wire a Raycast sensor to a Spud Gun turret above the entrance — this means any bot that pathfinds into the Station triggers a defensive turret.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can the Mechanic Station be destroyed?

No. The Dispenserbot and benches are invincible, even on Hard difficulty. Bots may aggro on you nearby but they cannot attack the Station itself.

Where should I place my first Craftbot?

Right next to the Dispenserbot, on a flat patch of ground. Leave at least 4 blocks of space in every direction so you can navigate around the bench while crafting.

Does the questline ever end?

Yes, after about 8 hours of focused gameplay. The questline stops at the underground final boss, but free-play continues indefinitely.
