How to Reach and Explore Mining Island

Grow Labs, the collapsed elevator shaft, the voiced story NPCs, and the Mechanic Station quest route that unlocks the island.

What Mining Island is

Mining Island is a standalone landmark added in Scrap Mechanic 1.0 and expanded in the Drilling Thunder update. It sits off the main road network — a rocky outcrop with industrial scaffolding, a half-submerged dock, and the Grow Labs research facility at its centre. Unlike warehouses, which are combat dungeons, Mining Island is primarily a story and progression hub. The island connects surface exploration to the deeper underground mining layer through a collapsed mine elevator that only opens after you advance the Mechanic Station questline.

If you have watched the Drilling Thunder trailer, you have already seen the island’s silhouette: cranes, conveyor belts frozen mid-motion, and the glowing green windows of Grow Labs. In-game, the island feels abandoned but not empty. Bots patrol the perimeter, and the interior holds voiced NPC encounters that explain why the mine collapsed and what the Grow Labs scientists were trying to drill toward.

Grow Labs

Grow Labs is the multi-storey building at the heart of Mining Island. The ground floor is a lobby with broken terminals and seed-sample crates — a hint that the facility once bridged agriculture and mining research. The second floor holds the Specimen Archive, where you find log entries from the Grow Labs staff. The third floor opens only after Quest 6 of the Chapter 2 questline and contains the Drill Control Room, the switch that reactivates the island’s conveyor network.

Inside Grow Labs you will interact with two story NPCs:

  • Dr. Elena Voss — a voiced researcher who explains the Grow Labs drilling program and gives you the Elevator Access Card after you clear the rooftop Farmbot patrol.
  • Foreman Kael — a mechanic NPC stationed near the collapsed elevator. He sells spare Conveyor parts and upgrades your Ore Prospector schematic once you return with refined rare metal.

Grow Labs is also where the game teaches the multi-block conveyor chain in a controlled environment. Follow the yellow floor markers from the lobby to the Drill Control Room; the tutorial conveyor accepts any ore type and outputs refined metal directly into a chest. Use this room to test layouts before building your production line at the Mechanic Station.

The collapsed mine elevator

The collapsed mine elevator is the island’s most important feature. Before the Drilling Thunder incident, it carried ore carts between Grow Labs and the underground caverns. Now the shaft is blocked by rubble, twisted rails, and a partial lava leak from below. You cannot descend until the questline gives you the Elevator Access Card and a Plasma Drill schematic.

Once unlocked, the descent works in three stages:

  1. Clear the rubble — use the Plasma Drill on the debris pile at the shaft mouth. This takes about two minutes with a handheld drill and thirty seconds with a vehicle-mounted array.
  2. Repair the elevator platform — place four Metal Blocks and one Bearing on the marked floor tiles. The Foreman Kael blueprint shows the exact layout.
  3. Activate the descent — flip the switch in the Drill Control Room. The platform lowers you into a dedicated Mining Island cavern that connects to the wider underground network.

The collapsed elevator is safer than random cave entrances because Cablebots spawn less frequently here. Treat it as your primary underground entry point once the island quest completes. For full mining strategy after you descend, see underground mining.

Story NPCs and dialogue

Drilling Thunder added fully voiced NPC dialogue to Mining Island. Dr. Elena Voss and Foreman Kael use the same dialogue system introduced at the Mechanic Station — subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen, and key lines are logged in the Quest Journal under the Builder Quests tab. Talking to both NPCs is required; skipping dialogue does not block progression, but you will miss context about the Grow Labs project and the rare-metal veins below the island.

Important dialogue beats:

  • First meeting with Dr. Voss — triggers Quest 6: Island Approach. She marks the island on your compass.
  • Rooftop clearance — after you defeat the Farmbot patrol, Voss gives the Elevator Access Card.
  • Foreman Kael introduction — unlocks conveyor-part trades and the elevator repair blueprint.
  • Post-descent return — both NPCs have new lines about what you found underground, foreshadowing the final boss in the quests and NPCs guide.

How to reach Mining Island from the Mechanic Station

Mining Island is not visible from the crash site. You reach it through the Chapter 2 questline that starts at the Mechanic Station:

  1. Complete Quests 1–5 at the Mechanic Station — place benches, build a tractor, visit the Trader, and defeat your first Farmbot. These steps are detailed in quests and NPCs.
  2. Accept Quest 6: Island Approach — the Mechanic Station NPC directs you to Dr. Elena Voss. Her compass marker leads east along the coastal road.
  3. Follow the coastal road — drive past the second Trader hideout and look for a wooden pier with a yellow warning sign. The pier connects to Mining Island via a short causeway.
  4. Clear the perimeter — Totebots and two Haybots guard the causeway. A basic Spud Gun is enough; bring at least 40 rounds.
  5. Enter Grow Labs — interact with Dr. Voss inside to unlock the interior floors and begin the elevator quest chain.

If you lose the compass marker, use landmarks and navigation tips: the island sits due east of the Mechanic Station, roughly 400 blocks along the coastal road. A helicopter flight at dawn makes the cranes visible from a long distance.

What to bring

  • Spud Gun with 60+ rounds for the causeway patrol.
  • Battery for underground headlights after the elevator descent.
  • Refined metal (20 blocks) for the elevator repair.
  • Food — Revival Burgers if you plan to continue into the underground the same trip; see Cookbot and food.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to swim to the island before the causeway unlocks. The water deals passive damage and Haybots patrol the shoreline.
  • Descending the elevator without a Plasma Drill. The rubble cannot be cleared with the hammer or Spud Gun.
  • Ignoring Foreman Kael. His conveyor upgrades save hours of manual ore hauling once you link the island to your main base.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I visit Mining Island before Quest 6?

The causeway is blocked by an invisible barrier until Quest 6 starts. You can see the island from the coastal road, but you cannot enter Grow Labs early.

Does the collapsed elevator connect to every underground cavern?

It connects to the Mining Island cavern and the main underground network, but not to warehouse basements. Use cave entrances near roads for those routes.

Do the story NPCs respawn if I kill nearby bots?

Dr. Voss and Foreman Kael are invincible and stay in Grow Labs permanently. Their dialogue updates as you progress the questline.
