How to Navigate Without a Map

Why there is no global map

Scrap Mechanic removed the global map in 2020 because the developers wanted the world to feel vast. Navigation is by compass and road instead. This sounds limiting but in practice it is faster than opening a map, because the compass shows quest markers and the roads connect every interesting location.

How to read the compass

The compass at the top of the screen shows cardinal directions and any active quest markers. The colour of the marker indicates distance:

• Yellow — very close (within 50 blocks).
• White — medium distance (50 to 300 blocks).
• Grey — far away (300+ blocks).

Quest markers disappear once you complete the relevant objective, but they reappear if you pick up the same quest again.

The road network

Every Scrap Mechanic world is built around a network of roads. Follow any road and you will find:

• Crash site — your spawn point, marked by a burning ship.
• Mechanic Station — large wrench-shaped building, often near the centre.
• Trader hideouts — wooden gazebos with flags.
• Campsites — small clearings with tents; sometimes have a Caged Farmer.
• Wrecks — broken vehicles and machinery, free metal and components.

How to find specific landmarks

• Crash site: walk away from your current location until you smell smoke. The crash site always burns for the first day.
• Mechanic Station: drive along the road until you see the wrench sign. There is always exactly one per world.
• Trader hideout: look for wooden gazebos with red flags. There are always two per world in the 1.0 patch.
• Warehouses: large industrial buildings with metal doors. Look for the glint of metal in the distance.

Navigation tricks from the community

1. Build signposts at every intersection. Three-block tall signs with your farm name, the next landmark, and the distance. The community shares these signpost blueprints on the official Discord.
2. Use a vehicle GPS mod. The most popular community mod adds a small GPS that draws your trail. It is not in vanilla but most multiplayer servers allow it.
3. Fly a helicopter at dawn. The sun rises behind the Mechanic Station, so a helicopter facing east at 6 AM will line you up perfectly.

What to do when you are lost

If you cannot find your base, open the inventory screen and look at the coordinates. Every block in the world has an XYZ coordinate displayed when you hover over it with the select tool. Your respawn point is shown in the same place, so you can navigate back by walking toward your bed.
