How to Use Packing Stations

From loose harvest to trade-ready Produce Crates — packing stations, Vacuum Pump delivery trucks and Spud Gun prep.

Why packing stations matter

Loose carrots and blueberries do not trade. The Trader only accepts Produce Crates — sealed boxes of ten identical crops. Packing Stations are the bench that converts your harvest into those crates, which unlock the Spud Gun and every weapon upgrade above it.

If you are still hand-carrying individual crops to the Trader, you are wasting inventory space and raid time. One Produce Crate equals ten crops in a single slot. This guide covers both station types, the 10-item rule, and the community Vacuum Pump crate truck that makes delivery a one-button job.

Vegetable vs Fruit Packing Stations

Scrap Mechanic splits packing into two benches, craftable at the Craftbot once you have refined metal:

StationAcceptsOutput crate colour
Vegetable Packing StationCarrots, beets, tomatoes, broccoli, wheatOrange (tier 1–2)
Fruit Packing StationBlueberries, pineapples, red berriesBlue / purple (tier 2–3)

Each station has a single input slot on top and an output chute below. You cannot mix crop types in one crate — ten carrots become one Carrot Produce Crate, not a mixed box. Place both stations side by side if you run a multi-crop automated farm; wire separate Conveyor belts so each crop type routes to the correct bench.

For crop tiers and planting patterns, see the farming guide.

The 10-item rule

Every packing cycle consumes exactly 10 items of one crop type and outputs 1 Produce Crate:

  1. Load 10 loose crops into the station input — manually, or via Conveyor belt from a Vacuum Pump.
  2. Press the pack button or trigger the station with a wired signal.
  3. Collect the Produce Crate from the output chute or attached chest.

Partial loads do nothing. Nine carrots sit in the input until you add a tenth. If your farm harvests in odd batches, buffer crops in a Storage chest and pack when you hit multiples of ten.

Building the Vacuum Pump crate truck

The fastest delivery method is a small vehicle with a Large Chest and a Vacuum Pump mounted on the rear:

  1. Build a flatbed cart with four wheels and a Driver’s Seat.
  2. Weld a Large Chest to the bed — this holds finished Produce Crates.
  3. Mount a Vacuum Pump on a short arm behind the chest, facing the packing station input.
  4. Set the pump to Out mode in the wiring menu so it ejects items from its internal storage.

Drive the truck up to your packing line. Harvested crops vacuum into the pump during farm runs; at the station, the pump deposits crops directly into the input slot. Pack, collect the crate into the Large Chest, repeat until the chest holds 10+ crates for a Trader run.

Aligning the pump — wait for the blue arrow

The Vacuum Pump only deposits into a valid input when aligned correctly:

  • Back the truck up until the pump nozzle faces the packing station input slot.
  • Watch the direction arrow on the pump HUD. It turns blue when the input is in range and accepts items.
  • If the arrow stays grey or red, nudge the vehicle forward or backward one block at a time.

Grey means out of range. Red means the slot is full or the crop type does not match the station. Check that carrots go to the Vegetable station and blueberries to the Fruit station before blaming alignment.

Suspension tip

Vacuum Pumps mounted on suspension blocks can miss the input slot even when the arrow looks blue. The pump bounces as the vehicle settles, shifting the deposit point by half a block.

Fixes that work:

  • Remove suspension from the pump mount. A rigid weld to the frame is more reliable.
  • Lower the pump one block so the nozzle sits closer to input height.
  • Reposition the packing station on flat ground — a slope on either side exaggerates suspension travel.

If items eject onto the ground instead of into the slot, the pump rejected the deposit. Pick them up manually and adjust the mount before your next batch.

From crates to Spud Gun

Once you have 10 Produce Crates and a Caged Farmer, drive to the Trader and exchange for your first Spud Gun. Orange crates (carrot, beet) and blueberry crates both count toward the initial trade. Higher-tier crates work but are overkill for the first exchange.

For the full upgrade ladder — Spud Shotgun, Spudling Gun, Spud Launcher — see trading and Spud Guns.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing crop types in one packing run. The station rejects mismatched items.
  • Packing on a slope. Crates roll out of the output chute before you collect them.
  • Forgetting to switch Vacuum Pump mode. In mode sucks crops in; Out mode deposits them. Wrong mode = silent failure.
  • Trading before you have a full set of 10 crates. The Spud Gun recipe requires exactly 10 Produce Crates, not 10 loose crops.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I pack different crops into one Produce Crate?

No. Each crate holds ten items of a single crop type. Mixed harvests need sorting before packing.

Do packing stations work with Conveyor belts?

Yes. Feed crops in from a belt and wire a Timer or Motion sensor to auto-trigger the pack cycle when the input holds ten items.

How many Produce Crates do I need for the Spud Gun?

Ten crates of any eligible tier plus one Caged Farmer. See the full trade walkthrough in the Spud Gun guide.
