How the 1.0 Questline and NPCs Work
Chapter 2 objectives, voiced Mechanic Station NPCs, Builder Quests, dialogue logs, and the underground unlock chain.
What changed in Chapter 2
Drilling Thunder is Scrap Mechanic’s Chapter 2 update. It replaced the silent hint system with a full questline, voiced NPCs, and a dialogue log that tracks every story beat. The questline starts at the Mechanic Station and ends at the underground final boss. Completing it is the only reliable way to unlock the underground mining layer, the Plasma Drill schematic, and the Ore Prospector.
If you played before 1.0, think of Chapter 2 as a structured tutorial for the endgame. The quests do not gate Creative Mode, but in Survival they control access to warehouses, Mining Island, and the collapsed mine elevator.
Voiced NPCs at the Mechanic Station
Three NPCs anchor the Mechanic Station in 1.0:
- The Builder — your primary quest giver. Fully voiced, stands near the Dispenserbot. Gives Builder Quests 1 through 8 and tracks your progress on a wall-mounted screen.
- The Trader’s Agent — a secondary NPC who appears after Quest 4. Directs you to Trader hideouts and explains the Spud Gun trade chain.
- The Dispenserbot — not voiced, but its interaction starts Quest 1. Treat it as the tutorial entry point.
All voiced lines include subtitles. You can replay the last line by pressing the interact key twice. Dialogue does not pause the game world — bots still patrol outside, so clear the area before long conversations.
Builder Quests overview
Builder Quests are the main progression track. They appear in the Quest Journal (default key: J) under the Builder tab. Each quest has 1–4 objectives and a material reward.
| Quest | Name | Key objective | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Welcome | Place Craftbot, craft Driver Seat | Refined metal pack |
| 2 | First Build | Build the tutorial tractor | Wheel set |
| 3 | Farming | Plant and harvest Wheat | Soil Bags |
| 4 | Trader’s Plea | Visit Trader, accept Spud Gun trade | Spud Gun |
| 5 | Farmbot Hunt | Defeat a Farmbot | Warehouse Key |
| 6 | Island Approach | Reach Mining Island, meet Dr. Voss | Elevator Access Card |
| 7 | Into the Underground | Descend the collapsed elevator, clear one vein | Plasma Drill schematic |
| 8 | Final Stand | Defeat the underground boss | Ore Prospector unlock |
Quests 1–5 teach core systems: crafting, driving, farming, combat, and warehouse access. Quests 6–8 are the Drilling Thunder arc and require mid-game gear.

The dialogue system
The 1.0 dialogue system has three layers:
- Active conversation — triggered by interacting with a voiced NPC. Subtitles appear at the bottom. Press Escape to skip individual lines; hold Escape to skip the entire conversation.
- Quest Journal log — every important line is saved under the relevant quest entry. Open the journal to re-read objectives and hints.
- Ambient barks — short unvoiced lines from bots and NPCs in the world. Dr. Elena Voss on Mining Island uses ambient barks when you approach Grow Labs before Quest 6 officially starts.
Dialogue choices do not exist in 1.0 — every conversation is linear. The system is designed for clarity, not branching narrative. Future updates may add choices, but the current questline assumes a single path.
Quest rewards and underground unlock
The underground is locked until Quest 7. Here is the unlock chain:
- Quest 5 — the Warehouse Key opens your first warehouse. Inside, you find the Schematicbot and mid-tier loot.
- Quest 6 — the Elevator Access Card opens Grow Labs on Mining Island. Dr. Voss explains the collapsed mine elevator.
- Quest 7 — the Plasma Drill schematic lets you clear the elevator rubble and descend. The compass marks the first underground vein.
- Quest 8 — defeating the underground boss unlocks the Ore Prospector at the Trader and completes the Chapter 2 arc.
Skipping any quest before Quest 7 means you cannot descend. Players who explore freely without the questline often find cave entrances but cannot interact with them — the glowing moss prompt only appears after Quest 7 starts.
Multiplayer and quest sharing
In multiplayer, quest progress is shared across all session players. If one player completes Quest 5, every player receives the Warehouse Key. Dialogue is local — each player must talk to the Builder individually to hear voiced lines, but objectives complete for the group.
Recommended co-op split for the questline:
- Player 1 — talks to NPCs, manages the Quest Journal, drives the quest vehicle.
- Player 2 — combat and warehouse clearing.
- Player 3+ — farming and base defence during long dialogue sequences.
NPCs beyond the Mechanic Station
Chapter 2 adds voiced NPCs at other landmarks:
- Dr. Elena Voss — Grow Labs, Mining Island. Quest 6–7 dialogue.
- Foreman Kael — Grow Labs elevator room. Sells conveyor parts, gives repair blueprints.
- The Trader — not fully voiced, but has new lines after Quest 4 explaining the Spud Gun economy.
These NPCs stay in the world permanently after their quest completes. Return to Dr. Voss after Quest 8 for epilogue dialogue that hints at future updates.
Tips for efficient questing
- Do not skip Quest 3. Farming teaches the Cook Bot chain you need for Revival Burgers before the underground boss.
- Build a quest vehicle early. A simple tractor with a roof and storage crate saves hours of walking between the Mechanic Station, Trader hideouts, and Mining Island.
- Read the Quest Journal after every NPC talk. Lines that seem like flavour text often contain coordinates or biome hints.
- Sync warehouse runs with Quest 5. The Warehouse Key from Quest 5 opens the nearest warehouse — do not waste it on a distant building.
- Prepare for Quest 8 like a boss fight. Bring Revival Burgers, a Spud Shotgun, and a circular bunker. The underground boss uses the same phase structure as the Trash Bot.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I repeat quests for extra rewards?
Quest material rewards are one-time, but you can replay quests for practice. The Quest Journal lets you re-track any completed quest.
What happens if I die during a quest objective?
Objectives persist through death. You respawn at your bed or the Mechanic Station and continue where you left off.
Does the questline work on dedicated servers?
Yes. Quest progress saves with the world file. All players on the server share the same quest state.
