Ruins and Roadside Rewards in 1.0
Updated ruin loot tables, random world NPCs, schematic crates and the routes worth clearing before Mining Island.
Why ruins matter again
Survival Mode always had ruin structures — collapsed barns, broken silos, roadside scrap yards. Before 1.0 they were mostly cosmetic metal farms. Drilling Thunder reworked every ruin type with dedicated loot tables, Tapebot patrols scaled to region tier, and schematic crates that feed the Schematicbot chain. Clearing ruins is now one of the fastest ways to bridge the gap between your first tractor and your first warehouse run.
Ruins also spawn random helper NPCs — voiced or ambient characters off the main quest path who trade components, mark Trader hideouts, or give one-time material packs. They do not appear on the Builder Quest tracker; use the Logbook compass markers after talking to them.
Ruin types and what they drop
| Ruin type | Where | Typical loot | Bot threat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roadside wreck | Every biome, on roads | Refined metal, components, wheels | Totebots |
| Collapsed barn | Plains, forest | Soil Bags, seeds, Cook Bot parts | Haybots |
| Scrap silo | Desert edge | Rare metal scraps, Battery parts | Yellow Totebot stomp squads |
| Industrial shell | Near warehouses | Tier 1–2 Schematics, circuit kits | Tapebots |
| Coastal pier ruin | Eastern road to Mining Island | Conveyor segments, refined plastic | Haybot dawn patrol |
Always scan schematic pickups before leaving — duplicates still grant component refunds at the Refinery Bot.
Recommended early-game ruin route
After getting started and placing your Craftbot:
- Crash-site wreck — five minutes on foot; enough metal for a second battery.
- First forest barn — follow the road north from the Mechanic Station; Wheat seeds for Quest 3.
- Second roadside wreck — drive your tractor; look for the wooden signpost community players leave at intersections.
- Trader-adjacent ruin — appears after Quest 4; the random NPC here often sells Spud Gun ammo below Trader prices.
- Pre-warehouse industrial shell — only after a Spud Gun; Tapebots snipe from upper floors. Read how to find warehouses before combining this with your first key run.
This loop takes about 90 minutes and supplies enough refined metal for a defensive base before wave 3 raids.
Random world NPCs
Chapter 2 added ambient quest givers scattered outside the Mechanic Station arc:
- Stranded Farmer — requests crop deliveries; rewards Revival Burger ingredients.
- Scrap Scavenger — marks the nearest unopened ruin on your compass for 24 in-game hours.
- Ex-Grow Labs courier — appears in forest ruins after Quest 5; hints at Grow Labs before Quest 6 officially starts.
These NPCs use the same dialogue log as story characters. Lines save under Quest Journal → Notes. Missing them does not block progression, but skipping them slows schematic collection.
Combat and preparation
Ruins in 1.0 are darker than Early Access versions. Bring:
- Headlight battery or torch blocks for barn interiors.
- Spud Gun with 30+ rounds before entering two-storey industrial shells.
- Sledgehammer for Red Totebot canisters — prioritize red variants first; Axolot warns they explode on contact.
- Revival Burgers if the ruin sits in desert or coastal biomes with storm weather — see weather and biomes.
Some bots dig through terrain after the Claygun update. Clay walls around a ruin entrance slow Haybots but not Tapebots. Use metal block choke points instead.
Linking ruins to the wider world
Ruins are not isolated — they connect to the 1.0 progression web:
- Schematics found in ruins unlock new 1.0 parts at the Craftbot.
- Desert silo ruins sit on tornado paths; mine exposed ore after storms — same logic as weather and biomes.
- Coastal pier ruins align with the Mining Island causeway; clear them when Quest 6 marks the eastern road.
- Industrial shells within 200 blocks of a warehouse often contain Warehouse Key fragments (three fragments combine into a spare key after Quest 5).
Multiplayer ruin clears
Assign roles for co-op:
- Scout — enters first with Spud Gun, calls bot positions.
- Looter — stays at the vehicle, sorts schematic scans.
- Builder — places temporary metal walls at the entrance for retreat.
Loot is shared in multiplayer. Schematic scans apply to the world, not individual players.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring ruins after the first warehouse — late-game shells drop Tier 3 Schematics for plasma tools.
- Clearing a silo during a desert tornado — wait for clear weather or use a dune bunker.
- Meleeing Red Totebots inside tight barns — the explosion destroys loot crates.
- Skipping random NPC dialogue — many hand out compass markers you cannot get elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Do ruins respawn loot?
Metal nodes and component piles respawn after several in-game days. Schematic crates are one-time per world unless you reset the save.
Are ruins required for the story?
No. The main questline works without ruin clears, but ruins are the fastest source of Schematics and spare Warehouse Key fragments.
Can bots destroy ruin loot?
Yes. Haybot projectiles and Red Totebot explosions can break crates. Clear bots before opening reward chests.
